Wow, this was a crazy experience. Tragic as well.
Yesterday was the closest I’ve ever been to a forest fire. We drove by the Pine Ridge wildfire (which is currently 0% contained) before it cut off our route west. While I’m not sure how close it was to us yesterday as it changed rapidly while we were eating lunch. I’ve read this morning that our route is now closed and a detour is in effect unless the fire crosses I-70/Colorado River. If you live in Grand Junction or are traveling this way- please read up on what to do.
It’s pretty crazy to look up and see that.
Before we got to Grand Junction, CO we drove through the mountains on I-70. I’ve been on I-70 back in 2004 when I was a Ranger out at Philmont Scout Ranch and the drive brought back quite a few memories. It’s the best highway drive (in terms of views) I’ve ever been on- anywhere.
