Wine Tasting with Tasting Lab and Google+ Local SF

Well, this didn’t change my mind about (eventually) owning a winery, that’s for sure.

This past week Jules and I were invited to a private Google+ Local SF event at WineWorks in the Dogpatch. A group of top reviewers got to sit down (literally) with mixologist and winemaking Stu (last name). Besides running his own winery, he also teaches wine tasting and blending for groups and even businesses! We got to experience some wines of his that aren’t ready for public consumption yet.

The goal of the event is to show how wineries blend different barrels of wine (same grape in this instance) to make a better overall batch of wine than the barrel by itself. What was fascinating to me was how a little blend of two different batches of wine could “save” the flavor…while too much could make the bad tasting wine worse. I knew that there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes with winemaking (like adding yeast and even water at times) but I didn’t realize how much of an“art” it was to make sure your batch of wine tasted good.

We also got to munch on some nice cheese from the cheese place next door. Pairing it with some nice crackers and meats on a Google+ Local cutting board (which we got to keep) was an excellent touch. It was great to see Christina and Shannon from the Local team as we all tried our hands at wine blending. Our group was pretty successful (at least we felt that way).

While you can make your own wine at WineWorks (barrels start at $5K), you will have to hunt down/hire Stu to do the actual wine blending class. It’s one of the best “classes” I’ve ever taken (not sure if I got a passing grade however). Want to see more? Check out all the photos from the event here.
